France reached a historic accord with New Caledonia, establishing it as a new state while remaining part of France. Following 10 days of talks initiated by President Emmanuel Macron, it was decided that no further referendums would occur except for one confirming the agreement. New Caledonia, home to approximately 270,000 people, requires economic recovery after recent violence resulting in 14 deaths and €2 billion in damages. Indigenous Kanaks have long expressed resentment towards French control, seeking greater autonomy or independence.
The parties agreed that a "State of New Caledonia" should be created, retaining a status within France while allowing Caledonians to remain French.
Prime Minister Francois Bayrou described the deal as "historic dimensions," emphasizing the need for parliamentary and referendum approval alongside focusing on economic recovery.
