French lawyers denounce threats against Sarkozy trial judge
"Intimidation and death threats against judges are absolutely unacceptable in a democracy,"
"I condemn them unreservedly,"
"We magistrates are quite used to getting threats from organised crime,"
"extremely serious for the rule of law"
Judge Nathalie Gavarino received death threats and messages threatening "serious violence" after sentencing former president Nicolas Sarkozy to five years in prison; Paris prosecutors opened two investigations. The sentence would make Sarkozy the first French post-war leader to serve jail time while awaiting appeal. Justice minister Gerald Darmanin and the legal community condemned intimidation and called for attacks on judges to stop. The USM magistrates union said the judge's photo had been posted on social media and warned this represents a new escalation beyond organised-crime threats. Court leaders demanded respect for judicial independence while some conservative outlets and Sarkozy criticized the ruling.
