Sweet and smart: Cake Zine reframes desert as a topic worthy of intellectual discussion
Briefly

Led by art director Noah Emrich, Cake Zine creatively pairs each issue's visual elements with thematic explorations of food. The latest issue, Daily Bread, delves into the cultural significance of bread, employing a mix of essays, poems, and art. The magazine showcases diverse artistic styles through commissioned works from emerging artists, reflecting a variety of voices—from professional writers to first-time contributors. Cake Zine's mix of whimsical design and serious editorial processes positions it at the intersection of culinary art and literature, embracing a DIY ethos despite its growth.
The art inside each issue is quite diverse and doesn't follow an overarching aesthetic throughline. We find this approach helps us to leave some of our own stylistic taste at the door, and opens us up to a broad range of work that we might have otherwise overlooked.
Despite the name, we consider ourselves a literary magazine. We take our editorial process seriously - every piece goes through multiple rounds of revisions.
Cake Zine came from our very early days of ideation... we still identify with the DIY spirit and unconventionality that 'zine' represents.
The latest issue explores the rituals, cravings, and cultural weight of bread across time and place - from communion wafers to club sandwiches.
