Ahead of Cannes 2025, over 350 filmmakers condemned Palestinian artist Fatma Hassona's killing in an open letter addressing industry silence. Hassona, a pivotal figure in Gaza's art scene, was 25 and documenting the conflict when she died alongside family members in an Israeli strike. The letter emphasizes filmmakers' duty to portray urgent social issues. Sepideh Farsi’s documentary premiering at Cannes, featuring Hassona’s work, highlights a personal connection, portraying both her life and the realities of life in war-torn Gaza. Juliette Binoche, notably, did not sign the letter, leaving her reasons ambiguous at the festival premiere.
For Fatma, for all those who die in indifference. Cinema has a duty to carry their messages, to reflect our societies.
Hassona became my eyes in Gaza ... fiery and full of life. I filmed her laughs, her tears, her hopes and her depression.
