Trump 'in no rush' to end tariffs but says deal with EU will be easy, as he meets Italy's Meloni
Briefly

In a meeting with Italian premier Giorgia Meloni, Donald Trump suggested that reaching agreements with the European Union could be feasible, yet downplayed the timeline for swift resolutions. He expressed that various countries are eager for trade deals, indicating that his administration holds leverage. Meloni's role emphasizes her as a bridge between the EU and US amidst rising tensions over tariffs and economic strategies. She framed their relationship as vital for Western unity while addressing trade negotiations aimed at countering China's influence.
Ms Meloni sought to portray the United States and Europe as natural allies in Western civilisation and said it was important to "try to sit down and find solutions" to tensions over trade and national security.
The goal for me is to make the West great again," Ms Meloni told Mr Trump.
The Trump administration has said its tariffs would enable trade negotiations that would box out China, the world's dominant manufacturer.
We have a lot of countries that want to make a deal. Frankly, they want to make deals more than I do."
