Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, survived a no-confidence vote with 360 votes in favor and 175 against her. The motion, initiated by far-right MEP Gheorghe Piperea, raised concerns regarding transparency in COVID-19 vaccine contracts. Von der Leyen described the motion as an attempt to erode trust in democracy and criticized the conspiratorial nature of the accusations. She emphasized the EU's need for strength and vision amidst global challenges, dismissing the motion as a political tactic to divide institutions.
In a moment of global volatility and unpredictability, the EU needs strength, vision and the capacity to act, von der Leyen said in a post after the vote.
It is taken right from the oldest playbook of extremists, polarizing society, eroding trust in democracy, von der Leyen said in her speech to lawmakers.
We can follow Mr Piperea down his world of conspiracies and alleged sinister plots or we can clearly call this out for what it is: another crude attempt to drive a wedge between our institutions.
The no-confidence motion hit out at, among other things, the long-standing transparency concerns over the negotiation of colossal EU contracts for Covid-19 vaccines.
