European elections' main impact likely to be felt in national capitals
Briefly

In some places, national conservative and far-right forces made big gains, but they did not do uniformly well across the EU. In France, Marine Le Pen's National Rally humbled Emmanuel Macron, while in Germany, despite scandals, Alternative fur Deutschland (AfD) gained more votes. These results mark worrying developments in traditionally influential EU countries.
Apart from France, Germany, and Austria, the far-right's scores were often underwhelming in other member states. Parties such as Belgian's Vlaams Belang, the Danish People's party, the Finns, and the Sweden Democrats saw disappointing results compared to expectations.
