President Andrzej Duda stressed at the ceremonies marking the 85th anniversary of the Nazi invasion that forgiveness does not negate the demand for reparations from Germany.
Duda emphasized the ongoing pain of the Polish people affected by the war and reiterated, 'Forgiveness and acknowledgment of guilt are one thing, reparations for the damage is another.'
Despite a change in government, discussions about compensation continue, as Poland is negotiating for reparations not just for the state but also for living victims.
Reflecting on the impact of the invasion, Duda noted that the brutal occupation led to the deaths of over 6 million Poles and significant destruction of infrastructure.
