A day after Slovakia's prime minister, Robert Fico, was critically wounded in what his government called a politically motivated assassination attempt, officials on Thursday were urging political parties and the public to reject escalatory rhetoric and hatred.
The shooting immediately raised political tempers in the Central European nation, divided between supporters of Mr. Fico's right-wing nationalist policies and opponents who accuse him of destroying democracy.
