French air traffic controllers' strike on Thursday caused hundreds of flight cancellations, impacting tens of thousands of travelers at the busy start of summer. France's civil aviation authority indicated that airlines, especially at Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport, needed to adjust their schedules. Significant flight delays were reported at Nice airport, with an average delay of 1.5 hours for arrivals. Ryanair canceled 170 flights, affecting over 30,000 passengers, while Easyjet cancelled 274 flights. The strike was prompted by issues related to understaffing and outdated equipment, according to the union UNSA-ICNA.
Ryanair said it had been forced to cancel 170 flights over Thursday and Friday, impacting over 30,000 passengers. 'Once again European families are held to ransom by French Air Traffic Controllers going on strike,' Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary said.
The Airlines for Europe association described the strike action as 'intolerable'. Air traffic controllers' union, UNSA-ICNA, said members were taking action over understaffing, outdated equipment and a toxic management culture.
