D-Day, 80 years on: Veterans cross the Channel once again DW 06/06/2024
Briefly

Today we come together to honor those nearly 160,000 British, Commonwealth and Allied troops who, on June 5, 1944, assembled here and along these shores to embark on the mission which would strike that blow for freedom and be recorded as the greatest amphibious operation in history. - King Charles III
"If I could go again, I would go again. I'm glad we sacrificed so that others (could) have a good life. It wasn't me, they're all heroes." - John Mines, a 99-year-old veteran
The surviving veterans, now in their late 90s and 100s, are the most honored guests at the commemorations, as their numbers dwindle each year. This may be the last major anniversary with centenarian veterans present.
