Cop28 landmark deal agreed to transition away' from fossil fuels This is the first time that fossil fuels have ever been mentioned in a Cop decision. And that Cop decision is that we will transition away from fossil fuels. That is no small thing.
Despite the urging of more than 130 countries and scientists and civil society groups, the Cop28 agreement did not include an explicit commitment to phase out or even phase down fossil fuels. Instead, it called on countries to contribute to global efforts to transition away from fossil fuels in energy systems in a just, orderly and equitable manner, accelerating action in this critical decade, so as to achieve net zero by 2050 in keeping with the science.
