College campuses across the country, including the University of Massachusetts Amherst, are under investigation by the U.S. Department of Education for discrimination, particularly related to allegations of antisemitism and anti-Palestinian actions stemming from the Israel-Hamas war.
The Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights has 137 open investigations, with 93 initiated after October 7. Some colleges are facing complaints regarding discrimination involving shared ancestry, in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act.
