NYC education advocates blast DOE for having no plan' for smaller class sizes
Briefly

Advocates for lower class sizes argue that although the New York City Department of Education opened 24 new school buildings, a comprehensive multi-year plan is necessary to meet the state-mandated goals for class sizes by 2028.
Leonie Haimson expressed concern over the city’s transparency regarding class size objectives, noting that without a detailed roadmap for staffing and spatial enhancements, the chances of meeting the 2028 benchmarks are slim.
The 2022 state law requires New York City to reduce class sizes significantly by September 2028, limiting them to 20 in K-3, 23 in grades 4-8, and 25 in high school.
NYC Schools Chancellor David Banks stated that the city is on track to achieve the 40% compliance rate for smaller classes this year, having met 20% last year.
