Historic Lambeth girls school closing due to shortage of pupils saved for educational use
Briefly

St Martin-In-The Fields High School for Girls in Lambeth, established in 1699, will close due to lack of pupils. The Tulse Hill site will be converted into a center supporting pupils not in mainstream education, offering respite care, mental health, and disability support.
Reverend Steve Chalke, founder of Oasis, revealed the site's transformation into a therapeutic center working with schools in the area. The center aims to support children at risk of falling through the educational system by providing supplementary education, meals, sports, and music opportunities.
The partnership with Crystal Palace football club will provide mentoring for young pupils at the center. The focus will primarily be on children in primary and early secondary school, aiming to intervene early to prevent exclusion, truancy, and mental health issues.
Rev. Chalke emphasized the importance of early intervention for at-risk children and families, highlighting that starting early can prevent them from ending up on mental health waiting lists. The initiative aims to tackle issues like exclusion and truancy from a young age.
