Girls participation in California high school sports continues to rise, national survey says

Girls sports in California increased by 7.4%, rising from 324,973 to 349,169 participants, while boys sports saw a 4.3% increase from 438,894 to 457,810 athletes during the 2023-24 school year.
California Interscholastic Federation reported a 5.6% rise in high school sports participation to 806,979 athletes in 1,615-member schools. CIF's Executive Director is optimistic about continued student involvement.
Football participation went up by 0.5% in '23-24, reaching 89,667 athletes after years of decline. Girls' soccer with 47,631 participants led in popularity, followed by volleyball, track, softball, and basketball.
