Are Early School Start Times Harmful for Kindergarteners?
Briefly

Research on school start times has primarily focused on adolescents, but recent studies show kindergarteners suffer from reduced sleep when school begins early. Early start times have also been associated with higher rates of childhood asthma. In response to the concern for adolescent sleep needs, many school districts have begun adjusting start times. However, early start times persist, particularly for elementary schools, as logistical challenges may prioritize transportation over students' sleep needs. Few studies have specifically addressed how these early start times impact younger children.
Little research has looked at early school start times for the youngest children, with a recent study indicating kindergarteners get less sleep when school begins early.
Early start times correlated with increased cases of childhood asthma, suggesting that sleep deprivation could adversely affect not just academic performance but health.
