Pedestrian and bicycle advocates in Berkeley are optimistic following the passing of Measure FF, which will generate funds for street improvements aimed at enhancing safety. The proposed initiatives include safer intersections, road diets, and the creation of pedestrian-friendly plazas, particularly around university areas. While the first safety projects are set to begin next year, there are concerns about rising costs and potential community pushback regarding parking and roadway changes. Advocates are hopeful for transformative change in the city's street safety over the next decade, despite acknowledging challenges ahead.
When voters passed the parcel tax Measure FF last fall, they created a new revenue source that will raise millions of dollars each year to help pave streets and make them less dangerous.
I feel very optimistic that in the next 10 years we will see a huge transformation in Berkeley... We will see much safer streets for bikers, walkers and drivers.
