More than 80% of EU marine protected areas are ineffective, study shows
Briefly

"Most of Europe's marine protected areas, which are intended to conserve species and habitats, are failing to meet conservation targets due to insufficient protection against industrial activities. An overwhelming 86% of these areas lack necessary safeguards, placing the EU far from reaching its 2030 biodiversity objectives. This is alarming, given the EU's commitment to protecting 30% of its seas with 10% undergoing strict protection from damaging interactions. We’re still at the outset in our efforts to conserve the oceans."
"The research underscores that to meet the EU's ambitious target of 10% strict protection by 2030, drastic regulatory changes are indispensable. We identified that only certain countries like Germany, with 45% of its national waters under marine sanctuaries, and Slovenia, which excels in limiting harmful activities, are making significant headway. However, the overall enforcement context across EU MPAs remains weak due to the flexible nature of the governing directives, hindering effective conservation strategies required for safeguarding marine ecosystems."
