GA4 annotations offer a way to document important events and changes in reports. There are two types: system-generated and custom annotations. These annotations help provide context, improve team alignment, speed up data analysis, and enhance stakeholder understanding. They build institutional memory by allowing new team members to learn from historical context. Annotations are visible to all users with access to the GA4 property, but do not appear on Explorations or Looker Studio dashboards. Adding annotations is straightforward through the Reports section.
GA4 annotations are notes you can add to reports that help document important events, updates or changes. They appear as icons on time-series charts.
Data without context leads to confusion, wasted time and missed insights. Annotations bridge the gap between what happens in your data and why it happened.
Annotations improve team alignment. Everyone sees the same context and understands what changed and when it happened.
New team members can learn faster by reviewing past annotations and understanding how data has responded to real-world changes.
