Acadia Healthcare has agreed to pay nearly $20 million to settle a federal investigation over allegations of defrauding Medicare and Medicaid, holding patients unnecessarily.
The Justice Department accused Acadia of admitting patients who did not need hospitalization, holding them longer than necessary, and failing to provide adequate therapy.
Tim Blair, Acadia's spokesman, stated that the company cooperated with the investigation and emphasized their commitment to quality patient care despite the settlement.
The settlement resolves claims that Acadia violated state laws, and it operates over 50 psychiatric hospitals, primarily funded through government insurance programs.
