Innovative Black and brown youth in the Bronx invented breaking in the 1970s as one of the core elements of hip-hop, spreading nationally and globally through movies and crew demonstrations.
Competitions in Europe grew popular in the 1990s, and breaking took a sporty turn in 2001 with the Lords of the Floor tournament sponsored by Red Bull.
