Briefly

ECAL presented furniture and objects made from biodegradable cellulose sponge at Milan Design Week 2024. When wet, these items expand to become sturdy, functional pieces like tables and chairs.
The research team at ECAL chose cellulose sponge due to its ability to expand ten times its size on contact with water. It took two years of experimentation to develop the expanding furniture showcased at the exhibition.
