You'll soon be able to get free COVID tests again in California. Here's how and when
Briefly

The federal government is relaunching its program to send no-cost coronavirus test supplies to U.S. households, following a rise in COVID-19 cases across the country in the summer. The program had been on hiatus since the fall of 2023.
Californians can request free tests at COVIDtests.gov. The online portal will open in late September, the Health and Human Services Department said, but it did not provide a specific date for when the website will begin taking orders.
The COVID-19 tests will detect current COVID-19 variants and can be used through the end of the year. Households can order up to four COVID-19 tests.
The COVID-19 tests are expected to arrive in mailboxes ahead of the holiday season. That's when the virus is most likely to spread as families travel and gather in indoor spaces, health experts said.
