2024 South Side Sox Top Prospect No. 72: Ben Beutel
Briefly

Beutel signed with the White Sox as free agent after going undrafted in 2022. The lefty was seldomly used through his first two seasons with the Iowa Hawkeyes in 2020 and 2021 after struggling through most of his appearances, but it all came together for him in 2022 when he posted a 1.47 ERA and a 2.47 FIP with four saves. Beutel also won a Rawlings Gold Glove, as the nation's top defensive pitcher.
Beutel's fastball sits only in the mid-80s, but his sidearm delivery makes it very deceptive. However, it's his slider that represents his best overall pitch. College bats hit worse than .100 against it in 2022 largely in part to Beutel's funky release angle that creates an extremely abnormal horizontal approach angle. Beutel pitched all of 2023 in Kanapolis, where had a lot of success - a 3.12 ERA backed up by a 3.24 FIP. He had a 22% strikeout rate, a 55% ground ball rate, and surrendered just one homer over 52 innings pitched.
