The proposed new vehicle rules by NHTSA aim to address pedestrian deaths in the US by requiring automakers to redesign vehicles, specifically targeting the impact of larger SUVs and trucks.
"It's good to see NHTSA acknowledge that a myopic focus on pedestrian detection - which is imperfect - is no substitute for actually regulating car bloat," said David Zipper.
The updated FMVSS will introduce testing procedures for vehicle designs considering pedestrian impacts, requiring crash test dummies that represent adult and child pedestrians.
NHTSA's changes could potentially save up to 67 lives each year by ensuring vehicles are designed to better protect pedestrians during accidents.
