A man was fatally shot while driving near Lake Merritt and crashed his vehicle into a nearby motel parking lot in Oakland, leaving authorities puzzled about the motive behind the attack.
The driver was shot by an unknown assailant while traveling east on Lake Merritt Boulevard, leading him to continue driving for about a half-mile before crashing into the Americas Best Value Inn motel.
Police have not disclosed a motive or suspect description for the shooting, and it's unclear whether the gunfire came from another vehicle or a different vantage point. The victim was shot from outside his vehicle.
