Larry Magid: How to manage an EV battery
Briefly

Most EVs use Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) batteries with various chemical configurations like nickel, manganese, and cobalt (NMC) or lithium iron phosphate (LFP) affecting performance and longevity. LFP batteries offer advantages like longer life, lower cost, safer charging to 100%, and environmental responsibility compared to NMC batteries.
Tesla and other manufacturers recommend different charging habits based on battery type: NMC batteries should be charged to 80% for daily driving, while LFP batteries can be charged to 100% daily. Charging any battery to 100% for road trips is acceptable but should not be a regular practice to avoid long-term battery health issues.
