THE WALRUS LAB CASE STUDY: AWARDS PROGRAMS | The Walrus
Briefly

The First Novel Award program, established in 1976, has been pivotal in launching the careers of many beloved Canadian authors, enhancing Amazon Canada’s role in the literary community.
Through our partnership with The Walrus, we've significantly elevated the profile of the Amazon Canada First Novel Award, increasing prize money from $7,500 to $60,000, comparable to the Giller Prize.
The impact of the award is evidenced by the success of ‘Five Little Indians’ by Michelle Good, which not only won the award but also became the bestselling Canadian book of 2021.
With the surge in engagement and recognition, Amazon and The Walrus have broadened their outreach to youth, with the launch of a Youth Short Story prize in 2018.
