Two new laws crack down on sexual harassment at California universities

The new laws Gov. Gavin Newsom signed July 15 require Cal State University officials to expand current sexual assault prevention training, standardize investigation and reporting processes, track cases, and address unprofessional conduct.
The signing of these bills is a significant first step to fostering cultural change, accountability, and trust at these institutions, said Assemblyman Mike Fong, who coordinated a 12-bill package addressing sexual harassment.
San Jose State made headlines in 2020 when an investigation revealed sexual harassment by sports medicine director, leading to resignations, investigations, and financial settlements.
Controversy in 2022 arose when a USA Today investigation found former Cal State University chancellor mishandled sexual harassment claims, leading to resignations across the 23 campuses.
