In California, the price of being considered middle class has risen significantly. Middle-class household income ranged between $61,270 and $183,810 in 2022 compared to $40,933 to $122,800 in 2012.
Oregon topped the list with a 53.2% increase in the income required to be categorized as middle class from 2012 to 2022. Following were Washington at 52.1% and Colorado at 50.4%, while California ranked fourth.
Over the past decade, the minimum household income considered middle class in the U.S. increased from $35,364 in 2012 to $50,099 in 2022, according to GoBankingRates analysis using U.S. Census Bureau data.
