The encounter took place at 12:30 a.m. Saturday, March 16, in San Marcos, the San Diego County Sheriff's Office said in a news release.
Deputies found a 'ghost gun,' an unregulated, unserialized and untraceable firearm, near the trail, sheriff's officials said.
