Calif. braces for wet New Year's Eve with back-to-back storms, forecasters say
"For people traveling on the New Year's Eve, it is going to be rather rainy across the region. We don't expect a lot of major flooding concerns, but we could see potting on roadways, some urban and small swing flooding in areas where there's poor drainage,"
"We always encourage people to turn around, don't drown, especially at night when it's a lot more difficult to see how the floodwaters go."
Two storm systems will move across California beginning on New Year's Eve. The first system arrives from the south and will produce moderate, widespread showers in the Bay Area, with about half an inch to an inch of rain and the heaviest downpours in coastal mountain ranges. Rain is expected to linger into New Year's Day. A second storm Friday into Saturday could bring more intense rainfall, with up to 2 inches possible in North Bay coastal ranges. The North Bay, west Peninsula, and Santa Cruz Mountains face the strongest showers, while Central Coast sees light to moderate rain. Temperatures are forecast to be milder overnight with highs around 50–53 degrees in major Bay Area cities, and localized ponding or urban flooding remains a concern in poorly drained areas.
