The number of people applying for permanent jobs in the legal sector dropped 60% between April and May 2024, the largest decline observed in a year.
Applications for contract roles also fell by 58% month-on-month in May, while job postings decreased by 27% for permanent and 23% for contract positions during the same period.
Ann Swain, Global CEO at APSCo, highlighted the concerning disparity in the decline rate between job applications and available positions in the legal sector, expressing worries about the future availability of skilled professionals.
Swain emphasized the impact of economic uncertainty and upcoming events like the General Election on the decrease in job postings but stated that the alarming rate of decline in job applications poses a more significant challenge for businesses in the industry.
