California minimum wage: What you should know about the change in 2024

Since 2017, California has been increasing its minimum wage annually, reaching $15 in 2022. The minimum wage in 2024 is $16 per hour, with fast food restaurants having to pay $20 per hour and healthcare facilities between $18 to $23 per hour.
Despite the state setting the minimum wage, some cities and counties have higher rates. For instance, Los Angeles and Emeryville have minimum wages of $16.78 and $18.67, respectively, with exceptions also outlined by the California Department of Industrial Relations.
