Advocates struggling to keep newly arrived migrant families off the streets in Massachusetts are relying on a patchwork of airport lounges, hospital waiting rooms and churches after the state capped the number of beds in family shelters and offered few options for those facing homelessness.
After staying in the State House past 1 a.m. on Thursday in their final formal session of the year, Massachusetts House and Senate leaders failed to reach a deal on a $2.8 billion spending bill which included a $250 million proposal for the state's emergency shelter system, The Boston Globe reported.
Cherlin Dubon, a triage case specialist at La Colaborativa in Chelsea, Massachusetts echoed those concerns. She faulted the state for not anticipating the sudden demand created by the cap.
