AI Filmmaker Compares His Tech to Something That Gets Worse the More You Think About It
Jorge R. Gutierrez, known for The Book of Life, announced at an Amazon MGM Studios conference that he would work with the studio on an AI-generated animated series titled Punky Duck. A shared still from the series reportedly shows hallucinations and nonsensical text, including a concert-poster-like image reading “Satorsay IUCT7AX - 0 PM.” Gutierrez compared AI animation to “having sex and then they hand you the baby,” and said AI feels like a punk-rock way to make something fast. He contrasted his usual two-year pilot timeline with AI’s speed, calling it a life-changer. Critics counter that art depends on the labor behind it and that removing that labor produces hollow work.
"“I'm used to two years for a pilot, and something like this... it feels like the most rebellious, punk rock thing you can do right now is to make something this fast,” he said of AI, as quoted by IndieWire. “For someone like me who's used to waiting so long, this has been a life-changer.”"
