Juneteenth, a holiday sacred to many Black communities, marks the day in 1865 enslaved people in Galveston, Texas found out they were free, two years after Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth festivities are rooted in cookouts and barbecues, allowing formerly enslaved families to reunite without the restrictive measures imposed by the Black Codes in Confederate states.
