Teacher in California school standoff accused of making false bomb threat, endangering children
Briefly

Veronica Renee Madere, a 49-year-old sixth-grade teacher in Baldwin Park, was arrested following a standoff where she allegedly threatened to blow up Olive Middle School. After being treated for injuries sustained during the incident, including self-inflicted wounds, she was charged with several crimes, including making a criminal threat and child endangerment. During the incident on May 1, she demanded $20 million and barricaded herself while students were evacuated. The motive for her threats remains unclear, and she has since been released on bond.
"On May 1, she called in sick then showed up at the school that morning, demanded $20 million before barricading herself in one of the offices," Detective Mark Berumen said.
"Some of her injuries were self-inflicted, others due to bean-bag rounds and a police dog biting her," Baldwin Park police Lt. Evan Martin reported.
"It's not clear how long Madere has worked for Baldwin Park Unified School District or what is her current employment status," said Erika Sanchez.
"As a precaution, students and employees were evacuated to Walnut Elementary School," Detective Mark Berumen noted.
