Nathan Hare, 91, Dies; Founded the First Black Studies Program
Briefly

Nathan Hare was a leading figure in introducing the ideas of Black power in academic circles, establishing the first Black Studies program in the US at San Francisco State University amidst resistance and a strike.
He clashed with establishment administrations and other left-wing factions like Marxists, shaping his identity as a Black nationalist and co-founding The Black Scholar journal.
Hare's perseverance in advocating for an interdisciplinary program studying the Black experience led to the coinage of the term 'ethnic studies' and a transformative five-month strike at San Francisco State University in 1968 and '69.
Despite facing opposition, including from the administration and other factions, Hare's vision for Black Studies attracted a diverse group of faculty and students, including future prominent African American figures.
