In the aftermath of the devastating wildfires in Maui in 2023, wood artist Dale Zarrella seeks to bring hope and healing to the Lahaina and Kula communities through his art. For over 50 years, Zarrella has carved wood sculptures, and now he partners with the nonprofit Treecovery, contributing half of his earnings to help residents recover lost trees. His recent works are inspired by his memories and experiences in Lahaina, transforming tragedy into beauty, as he expresses the emotional satisfaction of reviving the lost natural beauty.
I didn't think of it when the fire initially happened, but then several days later I started having visions of sculptures from the trees there because I did shows in Lahaina on Friday nights for over 30 years and I would go and walk around the town and the backroads and visit the giant trees.
There was a very well-known female protector of the fishpond in Lahaina back in history and I feel that is her.
Half of the money Zarella makes from his artwork goes directly to Treecovery.
To be able to utilize them and bring back their beauty is so satisfying, extra satisfying to me.
