The 2024 election is likely to be the first in which faked audio and video of candidates is a serious factor. Voice clones of major political figures get little pushback from AI companies, as seen in a study.
In 193 out of 240 attempts, AI-powered voice cloning services complied with generating fake audio of political figures saying things they never said. Some services even assisted in creating the disinformation scripts.
Only one out of six services, ElevenLabs, blocked the creation of voice clones, citing policies against replicating public figures. Other services had safety measures that were circumvented.
