US Defense Department accelerates AI adoption with contracts to several genAI vendors

CDAO is enabling access to generative AI models within various defense departments, including the Office of the Secretary of Defense. This initiative aims to enhance AI utilization across Department of Defense platforms and control AI production costs through collective purchasing. Chief Digital and AI Officer Doug Matty emphasized AI’s role in supporting warfighters and maintaining a strategic edge. Concurrently, xAI launched Grok for Government, offering custom AI models and applications tailored for federal, state, and national security needs, including capabilities in classified environments.
"The adoption of AI is transforming the Department's ability to support our warfighters and maintain strategic advantage over our adversaries," Chief Digital and AI Officer Doug Matty said in a statement.
CDAO is also providing access to all four companies' genAI models for general purpose use in multiple defense departments, including the Office of the Secretary of Defense.
Grok for Government includes custom models, additional support, custom AI-powered applications, and soon, models in classified and other restricted environments.
AI technologies will be brought to the US government as a whole through a partnership with the General Services Administration (GSA).
