OpenAI disabled certain promotional in-app messages in ChatGPT after users reported seeing ads promoting Peloton and Target beneath unrelated chats. The promotional items linked to integrated apps within the chatbot and appeared to some paid Pro and Plus subscribers as well as other users. OpenAI acknowledged that anything that feels like an ad needs careful handling and said it fell short. The company said it has disabled that kind of suggestion and will develop better user controls to allow dialing promotional suggestions down or off for users who do not find them helpful.
