"Sam Altman called it a "rare, once-a-decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be about and how to use one.""
"But analyst Paddy Harrington of market research group Forrester said it will be a big challenge "competing with a giant who has ridiculous market share.""
OpenAI launched Atlas, an AI-integrated web browser that makes ChatGPT a gateway to online searches. Atlas initially launches on Apple laptops with plans for Windows, iOS and Android. ChatGPT already reports more than 800 million users, many using a free tier while paid subscriptions exist. OpenAI is losing more money than it earns and is pursuing new revenue paths. The browser could capture more internet traffic and digital advertising revenue while potentially reducing clicks to traditional publisher links. The launch positions OpenAI in direct competition with Google and Chrome, which holds about 3 billion users, and follows recent legal and industry scrutiny of browser and search dominance.
