An analysis of 151 million American workers calculated that current AI systems could automate tasks performed by more than 20 million workers, equal to 11.7% of the labor force, if fully deployed nationwide. Vulnerable tasks amount to roughly $1.2 trillion in wage value within a $9.4 trillion American labor market. Current measured disruption equals about 2.2% of wages, or $211 billion. The Iceberg Index, co-created by MIT and Oak Ridge National Laboratory, simulates workers as autonomous agents executing over 32,000 skills across 3,000 counties and interacting with thousands of AI tools. The model tracks skill vulnerability and the wage value of skills AI systems can perform within occupations.
