For AI to truly take root in a company, people at all levels need to innovate, not rely solely on a chief AI officer. Skipping this role may sometimes be the fastest way to integrate AI.
Appointing a chief AI officer may not be necessary for all companies, similar to how the chief digital officer role evolved and, in many cases, disappeared or merged with other positions.
