Meta is allocating hundreds of billions to build large AI data centers, including the 'Prometheus' center, which will generate one gigawatt of energy. A larger center named 'Hyperion' aims to scale up to 5GW, equivalent to Miami's total energy consumption. Meta has strengthened its workforce by recruiting top AI talent and acquiring a 49% stake in Scale AI. These actions demonstrate Zuckerberg's intent to enhance Meta's AI capabilities and compete aggressively against other AI initiatives.
The first of these centers-expected to be online next year-is called 'Prometheus.' Zuckerberg says it will be capable of generating one gigawatt of energy.
Five gigawatts is roughly equal to the total energy consumption of Miami and equivalent to the output of five nuclear reactors-enough to power about 3.5 million homes for a year.
Meta has also acquired a 49% stake in Scale AI, bringing its CEO, Alexandr Wang, on board.
With this wave of infrastructure announcements, Zuckerberg is signaling Meta's intent to outpace OpenAI and other artificial intelligence initiatives.
