Using a graph machine learning model and data from 7,176 corner kicks, the team at DeepMind were able to build a tool called TacticAI which accurately predicted the first receiver of the ball and the direct result of the kick.
A survey of football experts indicated TacticAI's suggestions are preferred over current tactics 90% of the time, enabling coaches to explore alternative player setups with high success likelihood.
