The agency wants a machine learning agent that can autonomously fly a real aircraft safely, without violating training rules, as neural networks can find new ways to exploit situations humans didn't anticipate.
The X-62A VISTA, a modified F-16D aircraft, was chosen for DARPA's program after years of simulating different flight characteristics, now engaged in test flights under AI control since December 2022.
